Nobody could have anticipated what his son would do next

Michael J. Fox’s Journey: A Tale of Courage, Laughter, and Hope

Michael J. Fox is a name that brings to mind the fun, adventurous Marty McFly from Back to the Future. For years, his smile and energy lit up the screen, and fans couldn’t get enough of him. But what many didn’t see behind the scenes was the incredible fight Fox was facing off-screen—a battle with Parkinson’s disease that has shaped his life in ways no one could have imagined. At just 29 years old, Michael J. Fox’s life changed forever when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. The news was crushing. But instead of letting it defeat him, Fox chose to fight back in a way only he could: through his acting.

He didn’t let the disease define him; he used it to fuel his performances. In shows like House and The Good Wife, he played characters that reflected his own struggles, including a doctor with obsessive-compulsive disorder and a sharp lawyer who doesn’t back down.As Fox continued acting, his disease progressed, and his body began to show signs of the struggle. Memorizing lines, something that used to come naturally to him, became a challenge. He remembers his time on The Good Fight with difficulty.

In an interview on the Working It Out podcast, Fox admitted, “I hit a blank. I couldn’t recall my lines.” It was a tough moment, but he accepted that there were some things he could no longer do, and he wasn’t afraid to let go of those roles that required too much.

Even when his health took another hit—this time, with a serious spinal issue that put his ability to walk at risk—Fox didn’t give up. He had to undergo surgery and months of rehab. But life kept throwing challenges at him. One day, Fox suffered a terrible fall and broke his arm so badly that doctors had to insert 19 pins to help him recover.

Yet, despite these hardships, Fox never complained about life. He didn’t talk about “everything happens for a reason.” Instead, he talked about the power of perseverance, of keeping going even when things are tough, and forgiving yourself when life doesn’t go according to planThrough all of this, Fox’s optimism has never wavered. In fact, he’s used his experience to inspire others. His foundation, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, has raised over a billion dollars to help find a cure for the disease. In an interview with AARP, Fox shared, “Optimism is contagious. At 60, I love my life, my wife, and my kids, despite the challenges.”

Even when he’s faced with difficult moments, like dealing with online trolls or critics, Fox’s sense of humor shines through. His son, Sam, 33, encouraged him to reply to a rude comment online with the phrase “SMH,” which means “shaking my head.” The unexpected response got the troll to admire Fox instead of continuing the criticism! Fox’s ability to laugh at himself and the world around him is just one of the many things that makes him a true fighter.

Recently, fans got a real treat when Fox reunited with his Back to the Future co-star Christopher Lloyd at New York Comic Con. The two shared laughs and memories, showing the world that their friendship is still as strong as ever. Fox even joked about his Parkinson’s, saying, “Parkinson’s is the gift that keeps on taking,” laughing at the tough reality of his condition, but still staying thankful for the good things in his life.

Fox doesn’t focus on what he’s lost to Parkinson’s. Instead, he celebrates the joy, love, and laughter he’s found along the way. “People say I’m crazy for calling Parkinson’s a gift,” he said. “But it’s taught me what’s truly important—family, laughter, and staying optimistic.”
